29th September 2026 – (Nagoya) Hong Kong’s top men’s tennis player Coleman Wong began his Asian Games campaign with a commanding win, defeating Jordan’s Zaid Al‑Mashni 6‑4, 6‑1 to reach the men’s singles last 16 in Nagoya. Seeded first and ranked 108th in the world at the time of the draw, Wong steadied after a closely fought opening set before accelerating through the second to close out the contest in straight sets.
Persistent rain in Nagoya forced the day’s programme to move from the outdoor courts at Higashiyama Park Tennis Courts to indoor venues, with officials resorting to manual scoreboard updates. In the first set, both players held serve through 4‑4 until Wong secured the decisive break and served out 6‑4. Riding that momentum, he broke early in the second set and tightened his grip with successive returns games to establish a 4‑1 lead before sealing it 6‑1.
Wong will meet home favourite Yosuke Watanuki in the next round. The result follows Wong’s quarter‑final run at the ATP 250 Hangzhou Open, which concluded earlier this week, and underscores his status as one of the event’s frontrunners.
Elsewhere for Hong Kong, 18‑year‑old Kai resumed his rain‑delayed second‑round match against Japan’s Hayato Matsuoka on Centre Court and was beaten in straight sets after play restarted this morning. Kai is scheduled to return later today for the mixed doubles first round alongside Eudice Chong, with the pair set to face an Indian duo for a place in the next round.
