28th December 2021 – (Hong Kong) The University of Hong Kong recently removed the Pillar of Shame on campus, and many universities have subsequently demolished or removed sculptures related to the June Fourth Movement. In response, the City University of Hong Kong stated that the Student Union only applied for the display of the relevant object until 31st March this year. However, the Student Union has not submitted the relevant application thereafter, but CityU did not mention whether it will assist the Student Union to remove the statue.
The City University Student Union stated earlier that it would remove the statue placed in front of the Democracy Wall within a few days as required by the university. However, due to the large size of the statue, it could not be stored in the Student Union’s storage room, so it hopes the university will provide assistance. CityU said yesterday (27th) that as early as one and a half years ago, the dean had taken the initiative to discuss with the student union that teachers and students should abide by the established procedures and mechanisms of the university and apply for posting notices or temporary display of objects on campus. The Student Union also followed the relevant procedures and applied for the display of the relevant items until 31st March this year. However, the Student Union has not yet submitted relevant applications thereafter.
