2nd September 2026 – (Hong Kong) A six-second clip from what appears to be a university orientation disco night has spread on Threads after being removed from Instagram, drawing scrutiny of student camp conduct and a formal inquiry at City University of Hong Kong.
The footage is labelled “D1 Disco night”. The original poster’s caption complained of shouting until losing her voice. The video opens with men and women believed to be freshmen in matching yellow tops playing games openly inside a Mong Kok shopping centre. It then cuts to a dark indoor room where dozens of students wave glow sticks around a couple with their backs to the camera.
A long-haired woman is shown down to a red bra while onlookers cheer and swing glow sticks. A shirtless man then lifts her in a bridal carry, their bodies pressed together as the crowd erupts. The yellow shirts bear the words “Wong Siu-tin”, suggesting the group may belong to the executive committee of the Management Sciences Subject Association under the City University of Hong Kong Students’ Union.
Online debate followed quickly. Some commenters treated partial undress at disco nights as routine, with one remarking that stripping at such events was hardly surprising and another comparing it to rowdier camps at other universities. Others drew a gendered line, saying men often went shirtless but found it odd when women removed clothing. A further post sarcastically praised City University’s “standards”.
City University said it is committed to a harmonious learning environment and expects students to treat one another with respect and maintain good discipline. Student bodies running orientation camps must complete designated training, and the Student Development Office has issued guidance to affiliated organisations. Students who encounter problems during camp activities may seek help from the university at any time.
The institution said it takes the matter seriously and has opened an investigation. Officials will speak to those involved, remind them of legal obligations, university regulations and the student code of conduct, and decide whether to launch disciplinary proceedings under established procedures depending on the findings.
