Chun Wah Bamboo Scaffolding faces heavy fines following fatal construction accident

25th September 2023 – (Hong Kong) Chun Wah Bamboo Scaffolding Limited and its director received significant fines of $115,000 and $80,000, respectively, at the Kowloon City Magistrates’ Courts today. The penalties were imposed due to their violation of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance and the Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations. The prosecutions were initiated by the Labour Department.

The case revolves around a tragic incident that transpired on 13th December, 2022, at a construction site in Ho Man Tin. While a scaffolder was in the process of erecting a scaffold on the exterior wall of a building undergoing renovation, a dreadful accident occurred. The worker plummeted from the scaffold to the ground, resulting in a fatal outcome.

The Labour Department launched a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Their findings revealed that Chun Wah Bamboo Scaffolding Limited and its director had failed to comply with the mandated safety regulations and guidelines set forth by the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance and the Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations.
