CHP investigates case of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli infection involving 33-month old boy

3rd February 2023 – (Hong Kong) The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is investigating today a case of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) infection, and hence reminded the public to maintain good personal, food and environmental hygiene against intestinal infections.

The case involves a 33-month-old boy with good past health, who presented with diarrhoea and finger swelling on 22nd January. He attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Pok Oi Hospital on the same day. His condition was stable and did not require hospitalisation.

His stool specimen grew STEC upon laboratory testing.

 Initial enquiries of the CHP revealed that the patient had no travel history during the incubation period. Investigations are ongoing.
