CHP confirms 31 COVID-19 cases today including captain of HK & Kowloon Ferry, 3 sailors preliminarily test positive (Updated: 5.04pm)


10th January 2021 – (Hong Kong) Dr.Chuang Shuk-kwan from Centre for Health Protection (CHP) announced at the daily 4.30pm conference today that there were 31 new COVID-19 cases (as of 12am today) consisting of 3 imported cases and 28 local cases. The local cases include 19 cases epidemiologically linked with previous cases and 9 local cases with unknown sources. Total cases in Hong Kong have reached 9,243. The new patients comprise 20 men and 11 women aged between 7 years old and 81 years old. 30 more preliminary cases were recorded today.

The 3 imported cases include 2 cabin crew members who arrived from Turkey, Germany/Japan respectively and also an arrival from Brazil.

6 cases were linked to the construction site of the Central Tunnel of the Central Kowloon Route. A total of 7 cases have been recorded so far.

Yi Wo Yuen Aged Sanatorium Centre

One new preliminary case involving an employee was recorded at Yi Wo Yuen Aged Sanatorium Centre in Hung Hom. The employee worked on the second floor of the elderly home. 31 residents and 15 employees need to undergo virus testing and isolation.

Hong Kong & Kowloon Ferry

A captain of Hong Kong & Kowloon Ferry tested positive for COVID-19, the operator has arranged for the vessels to be disinfected. After tracing, it was found that three of his colleagues who were sailors also preliminarily tested positive. CHP is tracing their close contacts. The captain mainly operated several routes including Tsuen Wan-Three Runway System at Airport, Central to Peng Chau/Yong Shue Wan. He usually worked with a few colleagues and he was probably infected during rest and eating. More than 100 employees have been requested for virus testing.

Meanwhile,  Dr.Linda Yu from Hospital Authority (HA) announced that as of 9am today, existing 601 confirmed patients are being treated in 23 hospitals of the Hospital Authority and community facility at AsiaWorld Expo. Among them, 39 patients are in critical condition, 44 are in serious condition and the remaining 518 patients are in stable condition.

As at 9am today, 48 COVID-19 confirmed patients were discharged from hospital in the last 24 hours. So far, a total of 8,422 patients with confirmed infection and 1 probable case has been discharged.  

At present, there are 688 negative pressure rooms in public hospitals with 1,253 negative pressure beds activated.
