CHP confirms 16 new COVID-19 cases including an employee of Fortress electronics store on Nathan Road in Mong Kok


5th April 2021 – (Hong Kong) Dr.Chuang Shuk-kwan from Centre for Health Protection (CHP) announced at the 4.30pm media conference today that there were 16 new local COVID-19 cases (as of 12am today). The total cases comprise 15 imported cases and 1 case with unknown sources. The 15 imported cases include 5 from India (2 of them are N501Y variant carriers), 4 from Pakistan (2 of them are N501Y variant carriers) and 6 from the Philippines (4 of them are N501Y variant carriers).

 As of now, 173 N501Y variant cases in total have been detected comprising 71 British variants, 20 South African variants and 5 Brazilian variants. 65 of the remaining cases are still unidentified and 12 of them couldn’t be identified due to low viral load.

Total cases in Hong Kong have reached 11,525 as of today. A total of 7 men and 9 women aged between 10 – 42 years old were infected.

The new case of unknown sources is a 32-year-old man. On 30th March, he developed sore throat and swollen eye. His last day of work was on 22nd March. The patient works at Fortress electronic store at Shop 4-6, G/F & Lower Levels 1 & 2, 664 Nathan Road, Mong Kok. He visited United Christian Hospital between 23rd and 26th March after his wife gave birth to a baby on 24th March. During incubation period, he also visited  Kwun Tong Maternal and Child Health Centre.

He also visited the basement market at Lei Yue Mun Plaza during 28th March – 3rd April. 1 COVID-19 infected couple also visited the market before but at different times between 24th and 29th March. Lei Yue Mun Plaza has been placed under a compulsory testing list. All those employees and persons who were present for more than 2 hours at the basement market in Lei Yue Mun Plaza after 24th March need to undergo compulsory testing.

His colleagues at Fortress Electronics have been placed under quarantine and compulsory testing. All persons who spent more than 2 hours at Fortress electronic store in Mong Kok in the last 14 days also need to undergo compulsory testing.

Meanwhile, there are 3 preliminary cases reported today which are all imported.

Meanwhile, Dr. Sara Ho from Hospital Authority (HA) announced that as of 9am today, existing 128 confirmed patients are being treated in 21 hospitals of the Hospital Authority and North Lantau Hospital Hong Kong Infection Control Centre. Among them, 6 patients are in critical condition, 3 are in serious condition and the remaining 116 patients are in stable condition.

6 patients were discharged in the last 24 hours. So far, a total of 11,145 patients with confirmed or probable infection have been discharged.

At present, public hospitals have put to use 1,197 negative pressure beds with a utilisation rate of 56% and 651 negative pressure wards have been put to use, with a utilisation rate of 65%.
