29th May 2023 – (Paris) Shang Juncheng, an 18-year-old Chinese tennis player, missed his chance to become the first Chinese man in 86 years to win a match at the French Open, losing to Juan Pablo Varillas in a five-set match on May 29. Despite leading by two sets, Shang, ranked 200th in the world and a qualifier for the tournament, lost 4-6, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-1.
Shang suffered a left wrist injury during the match and required a medical timeout in the fifth set. Shang and his fellow Chinese players, Wu Yibing and Zhang Zhizhen, are the first Chinese men to reach the first round at Roland Garros since Kho Sin-Khie and Choy Wai-Chuen in 1937.
