4th December 2023 – (Beijing) Chinese President Xi Jinping held a meeting with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko in Beijing on Monday. Lukashenko, a staunch ally of Moscow, is visiting China to discuss various issues, including trade, the economy, investment, and international cooperation. The Belarusian presidency confirmed Lukashenko’s visit but did not specify whether he had already arrived in Beijing.
This latest meeting between the two leaders comes in the midst of heightened geopolitical tensions, particularly Russia’s offensive in Ukraine. Lukashenko’s previous visit to China in February and March was closely watched in relation to the situation in Ukraine. However, the Belarusian statement on this visit did not mention the Russian offensive.
China, a close partner of Moscow, has refrained from publicly condemning Russia for its actions in Ukraine, despite calls to do so from the United States, European allies, and other nations. Belarus, situated between Ukraine and Russia, has significant financial and political dependencies on both countries.
