Chinese athletes excel at Para Athletics Championships in Kobe, securing multiple golds

22nd May 2024 – (Kobe) At the Para Athletics Championships held here on Wednesday, Chinese competitors demonstrated their prowess by securing three gold medals, continuing their dominance in the event.

In a remarkable display of skill and coordination, Chinese wheelchair racers Jin Hua and Dai Yunqiang captured the top two podium spots in the men’s 1,500m T54 final. Jin clinched the gold with a remarkable finish in two minutes 54.85 seconds, closely followed by Dai, who took silver.

The women’s 100m T53 final was similarly dominated by Chinese athletes, with Zhou Hongzhuan and Gao Fang finishing first and second. They recorded times of 16.88 seconds and 16.91 seconds respectively, both setting season-best performances.

Adding to the medal haul, 25-year-old Zhong Huanghao successfully defended his title in the men’s long jump T38 category, achieving a notable distance of 6.66 meters on his second attempt. His teammate, Zhou Peng, also performed well, securing the bronze in the same event.

Zhou Zhaoqian further contributed to China’s success by winning silver in the women’s 100m T54, clocking her season-best time of 16.34 seconds.

As of Wednesday, the sixth day of the nine-day championship, China has solidified its lead in the medal tally with 18 golds, 16 silvers, and 14 bronzes. The event, which marks its first occurrence in East Asia, doubles as a qualifying competition for the upcoming 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris.

This year’s championships have drawn considerable international attention, with over 1,000 athletes from more than 100 countries competing in 168 events. The 73-strong Chinese contingent has shown strong performances throughout the championships, which were initially slated for 2021 but postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event is set to conclude on May 25.
