Chinese and South African officials pledge to strengthen cooperation in security and law enforcement

8th June 2023 – (Beijing) Chinese State Councilor and Minister of Public Security Wang Xiaohong and South African Police Minister Bheki Cele met in Beijing on Thursday to discuss strengthening cooperation in security and law enforcement.

During the meeting, Wang highlighted the strong momentum of practical cooperation between China and South Africa in various fields and expressed China’s willingness to work with South Africa to implement the consensus reached by the two heads of state. He emphasized the need to strengthen cooperation in BRICS Summit security, Belt and Road security, crackdown on transnational crimes, and law enforcement capacity building. He also called for promoting personnel exchanges and cooperation mechanisms at all levels to further develop the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and South Africa.

Cele, for his part, expressed South Africa’s willingness to strengthen law enforcement and security cooperation with China to continually advance bilateral relations. He acknowledged the importance of the partnership between China and South Africa and the need to deepen cooperation in various areas.

The meeting between the two officials comes amid growing cooperation between China and South Africa in various fields, including infrastructure development, trade, and investment. China has been a major investor in South Africa, with Chinese companies involved in major projects such as the construction of power plants, ports, and railways.

China and South Africa are also members of the BRICS group of major emerging economies, along with Brazil, Russia, and India. The BRICS group has become an important platform for cooperation among its members, with a focus on economic and trade issues, as well as security and political cooperation.
