29th March 2023 – (Beijing) Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, affirmed on Wednesday that Taiwan compatriots will enjoy real benefits after the country’s reunification with the Chinese mainland.

Zhu stated that following reunification, Taiwan may adopt a social system different from that of the mainland. However, as long as China’s sovereignty, security, and development interests are ensured, Taiwan’s social system and way of life will be fully respected. Additionally, the private property, religious beliefs, and lawful rights and interests of Taiwan compatriots will be fully protected.

Zhu also discussed the potential improvements to cross-Strait economic cooperation and the expected increase in cultural creativity on the island after reunification. She added that the people of Taiwan will have more opportunities for international development.

The spokesperson’s comments come amid ongoing tensions between China and Taiwan, with Beijing claiming sovereignty over the self-governing island. The Chinese government has previously stated its goal of reunifying with Taiwan, but the Taiwanese government has resisted such efforts, arguing for its own sovereignty and independence.
