China’s joint drills in response to Taiwan’s provocation for independence, warns Foreign Ministry

Mao Ning

29th May 2024 – (Beijing) China’s recent joint military drills conducted around the Taiwan island are a resolute punitive response to the provocative actions of Taiwan’s leader, who advocated for “Taiwan independence” in a speech on 20th May. These drills serve as a serious warning to external forces that support and connive at the idea of “Taiwan independence” and interfere in China’s internal affairs, stated Mao Ning, spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry, during a regular press conference on Tuesday.

Mao’s remarks came in response to a statement from the spokesperson of the U.S. State Department expressing concern over the People’s Liberation Army’s joint military drills around Taiwan.

Emphasising that the Taiwan question is solely China’s internal affair, Mao stressed that the United States has no right to make irresponsible comments on the matter. China’s joint drills are a justifiable measure to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Mao further asserted that these drills are necessary, legitimate, and fully compliant with international law and common practices.

Mao criticised the leader of the Taiwan region, stating that since taking office, he wasted no time in revealing his true identity as a separatist for “Taiwan independence.” His 20th May speech was a clear declaration of his agenda for independence, showcasing his nature as a “worker for Taiwanese independence.”

Mao highlighted that the most significant threats to cross-Strait peace and stability stem from the separatist actions of “Taiwan independence” forces, with the support and encouragement of external forces led by the United States.

Despite China’s firm opposition, Mao pointed out that the United States was the first to act wrongly by sending a delegation and issuing a congratulatory statement during the so-called “inauguration ceremony,” thereby sending a highly misguided signal to “Taiwan independence” separatist forces. Mao criticized the groundless accusations made by the United States against China’s lawful steps to uphold national sovereignty and territorial integrity, further exacerbating their mistake.

China urges the United States to fully comprehend the fundamental nature and dangerous ambitions of the “Taiwan independence” separatist forces. China also calls on the United States to recognise the grave harm and enormous risks posed by “Taiwan independence” separatism to peace, stability in the Taiwan Strait, and China-U.S. relations. China expects the United States to earnestly abide by the one-China principle, honour the commitments made in the three China-U.S. joint communiqués, and cease emboldening and supporting “Taiwan independence” separatist forces in any form.
