China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi stresses non-conditional assistance to Pacific Island nations

20th April 2024 – (Bejing) Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasised that China’s assistance to Pacific island countries has consistently been offered without any political conditions or impositions. During a joint press conference held after his meeting with Papua New Guinea’s Foreign Minister Justin Tkatchenko, Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, reaffirmed China’s commitment to providing aid without “blank checks.”

Wang urged the international community to give greater attention to the unique circumstances and legitimate concerns of the Pacific island nations. He emphasized the importance of addressing issues that are of utmost significance to these nations, such as climate change and the enhancement of people’s livelihoods. He further called for the generation of innovative ideas, practical solutions, and tangible actions to support these nations.
