14th August 2023 – (Hong Kong) In a momentous celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival, the Leisure and Culture Services Department (LCSD) has extended an invitation to over 100 members of the esteemed China National Opera & Dance Drama Theatre. They will bring their original contemporary dance drama, “Tide of Era,” to the Grand Theatre of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre in September. This captivating production delves into the struggles and poignant stories of ordinary individuals amidst epochal changes, offering an innovative dance interpretation of the country’s 40-year journey of reform and opening up. Tickets for this highly anticipated event will be available starting tomorrow, 15th August.
Directed by the renowned National Class One director, Tong Ruirui, “Tide of Era” has garnered widespread acclaim since its premiere in 2021. Breaking away from traditional patterns, this realism-themed dance drama boldly embraces the innovative concepts of modern dance, exploring new horizons in dance vocabulary and stage presentation. The choreography features mesmerizing group dances resembling tidal waves, characterized by progressive rhythms that embody the immense power of the ever-changing times. Through solo and pas de deux performances, the dancers skillfully convey vivid characters and delicate emotions, while the theme song captures the essence of transformative eras in the language of dance. Complementing the outstanding performances, the stage design incorporates geometric shapes formed by lines and surfaces, creating a visually captivating experience. The masterful use of multimedia and lighting techniques adds layers and dynamism to the visual space, imbuing the dance drama with a contemporary, technologically advanced, and futuristic atmosphere.
The China National Opera & Dance Drama Theater, a state-level arts troupe, has a rich history of producing and staging national opera and dance dramas. Since its establishment in 1951, the troupe has remained dedicated to its mission of preservation and innovation, having created and performed over a hundred remarkable works. Recognized globally, this esteemed arts troupe has been invited to showcase its legendary productions around the world, receiving widespread acclaim for its exceptional performances and top-notch artistic talent.
The LCSD proudly presents “City under the Moon: Dance Drama ‘Tide of Era’ by the China National Opera & Dance Drama Theater.” This event is part of the “Chinese Performing Arts Hong Kong Season” Series and is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the People’s Republic of China and the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Performances will take place at the Grand Theatre of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre on 23rd September at 7.30pm and 24th September at 2.30pm.
