China issues blue alert as heavy rainfall and storms threaten several provinces

24th April 2024 – (Beijing) China’s National Meteorological Centre has issued a renewed blue alert on Wednesday, warning of imminent rainstorms and heavy downpours in certain parts of the country. The alert covers the period from Wednesday afternoon to Thursday afternoon, with the provinces of Guizhou, Hunan, Jiangxi, Guangxi, and Guangdong expected to bear the brunt of the severe weather.

The meteorological center has predicted that these regions will experience significant rainfall, with the possibility of hourly precipitation exceeding 60 millimeters. Thunderstorms and gales are also anticipated to accompany the heavy downpours, posing additional risks to the affected areas.

In response to the alert, local authorities have been urged to take necessary precautions and fulfill their responsibilities in ensuring public safety. Educational institutions, such as schools and kindergartens, have been specifically instructed to prioritize the well-being of students and children during this period of inclement weather. Furthermore, drivers have been advised to exercise caution due to the potential hazards of road waterlogging and increased traffic congestion.

China’s weather warning system operates on a four-tier, colour-coded scale, with red indicating the most severe level of danger, followed by orange, yellow, and blue. The issuance of the blue alert underscores the importance of remaining vigilant and adequately prepared for the anticipated heavy rainfall and storms in the affected provinces.
