China implements pay rise for overseas diplomats

19th April 2024 – (Beijing) The Chinese government has approved a substantial salary increase for its diplomats stationed abroad, as confirmed by multiple anonymous sources obtained by SCMP. The decision will see salaries rising by more than $1,000 per month for all ranks across Chinese embassies and consulates globally.

This financial enhancement comes at a time of widespread budgetary constraints within China, with various government sectors experiencing cuts. The pay rise is significant, especially considering that domestic foreign affairs officials will not benefit from this increase.

The move is interpreted by analysts as a strategic effort to stabilise the diplomatic corps following the unexpected removal of former Foreign Minister Qin Gang last year. Qin’s abrupt dismissal and subsequent disappearance from the public eye have fuelled speculation and concern within the diplomatic community.
