China clinches 16th Uber Cup title with victory over Indonesia

5th May 2024 – (Chengdu) China secured its 16th Uber Cup title after a resounding 3-0 victory against Indonesia on Sunday. Competing on home soil for the first time since 2016, China entered the tournament as the frontrunner despite their loss to South Korea in the previous final two years ago.

The host team, led by Olympic champion Chen Yufei, dominated the competition. Chen Yufei showcased her exceptional skills as she defeated Gregoria Mariska Tunjung with a commanding score of 21-7, 21-16 in the opening singles match. In the doubles clash, world No. 1 Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan displayed their formidable partnership, securing a convincing 21-11, 21-8 victory over Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti and Ribka Sugiarto.

Although Indonesian teenager Ester Nurumi Tri claimed the first set 21-10 in the second singles match, China’s He Bingjiao made a remarkable comeback to seal the triumph with a final score of 21-15, 21-17.

The biennial badminton championships, known as the Uber Cup, took place in Chengdu, located in southwest China’s Sichuan Province. The event drew exceptional talent from around the world, with teams competing fiercely for the prestigious title. The Thomas Cup, the men’s equivalent of the Uber Cup, was also scheduled to conclude with its final match on Sunday evening.
