
1st June 2023 – (Beijing) China and Germany, two major global powers, are looking to strengthen their comprehensive strategic partnership. On Wednesday, Wang Yi, director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, met with Jens Plotner, foreign and security policy advisor to the German chancellor, in Beijing to discuss bilateral relations and global challenges.
Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, emphasized the importance of not only steadily developing bilateral relations, but also jointly addressing global challenges. He spoke of the increasing instability and uncertainties in the international situation and how China and Germany should work together to make the upcoming seventh China-Germany inter-governmental consultation a success, sending a positive signal to Europe and the world.
Plotner acknowledged the solid foundation of Germany-China relations and reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to the one-China policy. He expressed his anticipation for the upcoming round of inter-governmental consultation between the two countries and pledged to work together to speed up the preparatory work.
The two sides also exchanged views on Ukraine and other international and regional issues of common concern. This meeting comes at a time when relations between China and Germany have been in the spotlight due to concerns over human rights abuses in Xinjiang and Hong Kong, as well as the recent controversy surrounding the EU-China Comprehensive Agreement on Investment.
