23rd April 2024 – (Phnom Penh) During a meeting in Phnom Penh this Monday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced the advent of a new era in the China-Cambodia relationship, characterised by elevated cooperation and shared aspirations. Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, was speaking alongside Cambodian Senate President Samdech Techo Hun Sen.

The discussions heralded what Wang described as the commencement of a “new era” of high-level, high-quality, and high-standard partnerships under the strategic initiative known as the China-Cambodia community with a shared future. This year also marks the China-Cambodia People-to-People Exchange Year, an initiative aimed at deepening cultural and interpersonal bonds between the two nations.

Wang expressed China’s readiness to collaborate closely with Cambodia to implement the consensus reached at the highest levels of government. He emphasised the desire to continue and enhance the traditions of mutual trust, unity, collaboration, and mutual benefit that have long defined the bilateral relationship. Key projects like the Industrial Development Corridor and the Fish and Rice Corridor were highlighted as priorities for rapid implementation.

Furthermore, Wang proposed an expansion in intergovernmental cooperation, including the sharing of governance experiences, strengthening legislative exchanges, and elevating inter-party dialogue to new heights. These measures, he suggested, would ensure that the friendship between China and Cambodia continues to yield tangible benefits for both populations.

Responding to Wang’s remarks, Hun Sen reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to its strategic partnership with China, describing the nation as a close friend and ally. He reflected positively on the seventh meeting of the Cambodia-China Intergovernmental Coordination Committee, noting the high degree of political mutual trust that was evident and its importance as a driving force for Cambodia’s development.

Hun Sen also expressed hopes for expanding cooperation fields, enriching the cooperation content, and implementing more significant projects. He underscored the importance of these efforts in making continuous and positive strides towards realising a shared community in this new era.
