Chief Executive extends term of office for non-permanent judge in Hong Kong’s Court of Final Appeal

Lord Neuberger of Abbotsbury

23rd February 2024 – (Hong Kong) In a move recommended by the Chief Justice of the Court of Final Appeal, the Chief Executive has approved an extension to the term of office for the Right Honourable the Lord Neuberger of Abbotsbury, GBS, as a non-permanent judge from another common law jurisdiction of the Court of Final Appeal. The extension will be for a period of three years, starting from 1st March, 2024.

Under the provisions of the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal Ordinance, there are two lists of judges: non-permanent Hong Kong judges and judges from other common law jurisdictions. The initial term of appointment for these judges is three years. However, the Chief Executive has the authority to extend this term for one or more periods of three years, based on the recommendation of the Chief Justice.

The extension of Lord Neuberger’s term reflects the recognition of his expertise and valuable contributions to the Court of Final Appeal. As a non-permanent judge from another common law jurisdiction, Lord Neuberger brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the court’s proceedings. His continued presence will contribute to the maintenance of a robust and diverse judicial system in Hong Kong.
