26th May 2023 – (Hong Kong) Today (May 26th) marks Buddha’s Birthday, and Cheung Chau Island is celebrating with the Cheung Chau Bun Festival, which has been revived after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic. The festivities will also include the return of the Piu Sik Parade and the Bun Scrambling Competition, which were also suspended during the pandemic.
At the Central Ferry Pier today, there was a bustling crowd of people coming and going, with even more heading to Cheung Chau Island’s Pier 5, many of them families with young children, creating a lively atmosphere. In response to the expected surge of visitors, a special ferry service will depart Cheung Chau Island for Central at 1.15 am on 27th May, shortly after the Bun Scrambling Competition concludes. Additionally, a special bus service, Route 104R, will operate from Central Pier 5 to Mong Kok from 1.10am to 2.30am.

The revival of these festivities after a long hiatus is cause for celebration for many in the Cheung Chau community and beyond. The pandemic has disrupted many traditional events and celebrations, and the return of these festivities is a welcome sign of a return to normalcy.
