1st September 2026 – (Hong Kong) Tropical Cyclone Saudel is skirting more than 200 kilometres to the southeast of Hong Kong and is forecast to move nearer to the eastern Guangdong coast tonight and tomorrow, with gradual intensification. Its outer rainbands are set to deliver squally showers across the territory. Under the combined influence of Saudel and the northeast monsoon, winds will at times be strong offshore and on high ground.
Forecasters indicated that, unless Saudel strengthens markedly and its stronger winds approach the Pearl River Estuary, widespread strong winds over Hong Kong are unlikely. The probability of issuing the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 today and tomorrow is relatively low, and the Standby Signal, No. 1 is expected to stay in effect for the rest of today and into tomorrow morning.
Current projections suggest Saudel will linger near the northeastern South China Sea and along the eastern Guangdong coast on Thursday, 3rd September. There remain significant uncertainties regarding its subsequent track and intensity, and the Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal may continue through the latter part of the week. The public is advised to keep abreast of the latest bulletins from the Observatory.
The forecast for tonight and tomorrow is mainly cloudy with occasional squally showers and isolated thunderstorms, temperatures between 26 and 30 degrees, and moderate to fresh north to northwesterly winds, occasionally strong offshore and on high ground. Swells are expected.
Looking ahead, a few showers are likely to persist over the next couple of days as Saudel moves across the northern South China Sea and gradually approaches the eastern Guangdong coast, bringing windier conditions, squally showers and coastal swells to southern China. Saudel is forecast to meander near the northeastern South China Sea and the eastern Guangdong coast on Thursday, with ongoing uncertainty in its path and strength. Showers are still anticipated across the Guangdong coast later in the week. In addition, Tropical Cyclone Krovanh is expected to intensify gradually and head towards the Ryukyu Islands in the coming days.
