25th November 2021 – (Hong Kong) The century-old Romanesque underground reservoir in Sham Shui Po was nearly demolished last year and was finally rated as a first-class historic building. The Water Supplies Department said today (25th) that following January’s successive temporary reinforcement, consolidation and protection works for the service reservoir, guided tours will be opened for citizens on the 15th of next month and citizens can make an appointment as soon as possible on the 1st of next month.

The Water Supplies Department will open the service reservoir free of charge from the 15th of next month to June 14th next year. It is tentatively scheduled to be open for a period of six months. Later, it will be arranged according to response and demand. At present, each tour group has a maximum of 12 visitors and the visit will be conducted in the form of a 90-minute guided tour. It is estimated that the total number of visitors per month will be about 1,000.
On the 1st of next month, the special page of the “Former Sham Shui Po Service Reservoir” website will be available for public bookings. As for the improvement works carried out by the Water Supplies Department earlier, the cost is about 20 million Hong Kong dollars, including the installation of temporary drainage facilities to drain rainwater, the restoration of damaged stones and bricks that were demolished earlier, the installation of skylight glasses, the installation of high-strength security fences and closed-circuit cameras.
