Cecelia Cheung’s potential cameo and Dilraba Dilmurat’s role in Stephen Chow’s “Women’s Soccer”

25th May 2025 – (Hong Kong) Stephen Chow’s latest film, “Women’s Soccer,” has sparked debates over who will claim the coveted position of the lead actress. While mainland Chinese actress Zhang Xiaofei has long been deemed the frontrunner for the top spot, the spotlight has recently shifted to Dilraba Dilmurat, who has been meticulously involved in the entire filming process from start to finish. The movie, kept under wraps since its inception in March, has drawn significant attention, particularly regarding the cast lineup and character rankings. Speculations abound, suggesting that mainland artists Zhang Yixing and Zhang Xiaofei have secured the lead roles, with Dilraba Dilmurat presumed to be in a supporting role. However, with her rigorous preparation, including intense physical training resulting in visible abdominal muscles, Dilraba Dilmurat has emerged as a focal point, sporting the number “10” on her soccer jersey, reminiscent of Stephen Chow’s previous film “Shaolin Soccer.”

Throughout the filming of “Women’s Soccer,” secrecy has shrouded the production, with media outlets eager to capture the latest developments. Earlier, the film crew was spotted at a large stadium in mainland China, revealing a bustling set with numerous tents and cranes, alongside multiple actor trailers. Reports suggest that Stephen Chow was actively involved on set, offering personal guidance. Recent rumours indicated that filming had swiftly concluded, with Zhang Xiaofei already departing Shenzhen after completing her scenes, leaving many surprised by the accelerated schedule. It was later clarified that while Zhang Xiaofei’s portion had wrapped up, Dilraba Dilmurat’s scenes were scheduled for completion by the 6th of next month, aligning with the production team’s wrap-up.

Dilraba Dilmurat has been an integral part of the film from commencement to conclusion, an involvement viewed as significant by filmmaker and Chow’s close associate, Tin Kai-man. Previously, Dilraba Dilmurat was captured practising continuously in a red “Number 8” soccer jersey on set, reigniting discussions on who truly holds the lead role. Dilraba Dilmurat’s dedication to the “Women’s Soccer” project has been all-encompassing, even sacrificing personal time, including celebrating her 33rd birthday on set next month.

Aside from the lead role contention, the film boasts a stellar cast, including award-winning actress Sisley Choi and Korean film star Kang-ho Song. Recent speculations hint at Cecelia Cheung, who once made a cameo in “Shaolin Soccer,” returning for a cameo appearance.
