30th September 2023 – (Hong Kong) Cathay Pacific, based in Hong Kong, has placed an order for 32 A320neo planes from Airbus as part of its expansion plans for flights to mainland China and other destinations in Asia. The financial details of the deal have not been disclosed, but based on current list prices, the agreement is estimated to be valued between $3.2 billion and $4.1 billion.
This order comes as no surprise, as Cathay had already expressed its intention to bolster its fleet of medium-haul jets back in August. In 2017, they placed an initial order for 32 A320neos. Airbus highlights that the A320neo, with its improved fuel efficiency, is a top-selling aircraft in the industry and a strong competitor to Boeing’s 737 MAX.
Christian Scherer, Chief Commercial Officer of Airbus, expressed pride in being a part of Cathay’s recovery and growth strategy, stating, “Cathay is one of the world’s leading airline groups, and we are proud to be part of its recovery and growth plan.”
Out of the original 2017 order, Cathay has already taken delivery of thirteen planes. The newly ordered jets are expected to be delivered by 2029, according to Cathay’s Chief, Ronald Lam. He emphasized that these aircraft offer the latest technological advancements, providing passengers with a quieter, more comfortable, and fuel-efficient travel experience.
The A320neo is a popular choice for airlines worldwide due to its enhanced performance and reduced environmental impact. It incorporates cutting-edge technologies that contribute to lower fuel consumption, reduced emissions, and decreased noise levels. These features align with Cathay Pacific’s commitment to delivering an exceptional customer experience while prioritising sustainability.
Cathay’s decision to expand its fleet reflects its confidence in the recovery and growth of the aviation industry, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. As travel demand continues to rebound, the additional A320neo aircraft will support the airline’s plans to expand its route network and meet the needs of its passengers.
Airbus remains a key player in the aviation industry, consistently delivering innovative and efficient aircraft to meet the evolving demands of airlines worldwide. The partnership between Airbus and Cathay Pacific signifies a significant step forward in both companies’ mutual goals of sustainable growth and delivering high-quality travel experiences to customers across the globe.
