8th August 2020 – (Calicut) An Air India Express plane carrying 191 people on board from Dubai crashed when it overshot the runway and broke into two pieces while attempting to land at Calicut International Airport in India.
“Several passengers are injured,” an Air India spokesman responded. Six crew members were on board in addition to the passengers, news agency Asian News International said in a tweet.
The incident happened around 7:40pm local time during a storm. Calicut airport is located on a plateau with steep banks surrounding the runway.
A state official said at least the pilot had been killed in the crash, with police reporting that dozens of passengers had been injured. Former Union Minister of State for Culture, and Tourism Alphons Kannanthanam tweeted that all passengers had been evacuated.
