Bondi mall attacker may have targeted women, Australian Police reveal

15th April 2024 – (Sydney) Australian authorities disclosed on Monday that the suspect behind the fatal stabbing spree at a bustling Sydney shopping centre predominantly attacked women, raising concerns over potential gender-targeted violence. The tragic incident, which occurred on Saturday at the Westfield Bondi Junction mall in the beach suburb of Bondi, resulted in six fatalities and several injuries.

Karen Webb, the Police Commissioner for New South Wales, informed the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that the assailant’s actions suggested a deliberate avoidance of men during the attack. “It’s obvious to detectives that the offender focused on women,” Webb stated, highlighting that this pattern forms a crucial aspect of their ongoing investigation.

The attack, which left five women dead, was executed by 40-year-old Joel Cauchi, who was subsequently neutralised by Police Inspector Amy Scott. Scott, hailed as a hero for her brave confrontation, acted decisively, ending the assault which lasted approximately half an hour.
