3rd June 2026 – (Taipei) BMW’s colour‑shifting concept has arrived in Taipei, showcasing an exterior that can morph through eight animated patterns using E Ink’s Prism electronic paper. First unveiled at the 2026 Beijing motor show, the BMW iX3 Flow Edition is billed as the first car to integrate e‑paper technology on a path towards series production, turning the bodywork into a programmable canvas for personal expression. The vehicle is on display at Taipei World Trade Centre Hall 1 through 5th June.
The breakthrough adapts e‑readers’ low‑power screens to automotive use, embedding millions of charged pigment microcapsules across curved body panels, including the bonnet, to deliver dynamic visuals while consuming energy only when changing states. E Ink says the system meets tough durability demands for outdoor and automotive environments, offering strong daylight visibility, no backlight, and lower carbon impact than conventional displays. Owners could one day switch designs to match mood, attire or occasion without resprays, extending customisation beyond fixed paint.
BMW and E Ink have iterated the concept since the monochrome iX Flow at CES 2022, the full‑colour i Vision Dee in 2023, and the art‑car i5 Flow NOSTOKANA. With the iX3 Flow Edition, the partners signal a transition from showpiece to production‑ready applications, hinting at a future where body colour, patterns and even wheel graphics can be reconfigured by software—bringing science‑fiction styling into everyday mobility.
