12th December 2022 – (New York) Disney and Marvel Studios’ superhero film “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” held the No. 1 spot at the North American box office for the fifth consecutive weekend without much in the way of competition, according to studio figures released by measurement firm Comscore on Sunday.
The sequel to 2018’s box office hit “Black Panther” generated an estimated 11.1 million U.S. dollars this weekend for a North American cume of 409.8 million to date, pushing its global total to 767.8 million dollars. It’s the first film since “Black Panther” to lead the box office for five consecutive weekends in North America.
Directed by African-American filmmaker Ryan Coogler, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” stars Angela Bassett, Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke and Florence Kasumba. The film follows the heroes of the fictional kingdom of Wakanda who fight to protect their nation from intervening world powers in the wake of King T’Challa’s death.
There was no major new release this weekend in North America. Universal Pictures’ Christmas action-comedy “Violent Night” stayed in second place with 8.7 million dollars on its second weekend for a North American total of 26.7 million dollars.
Rounding out the top three, Disney’s “Strange World” took in 3.6 million dollars on its third weekend. The film has grossed 30.45 million dollars in North America through Sunday.
