Bitcoin near $83,000 revives silk road‑era wallet as $70 grows to $1.7 million

1st October 2026 – (New York) Bitcoin’s surge to about $83,000 has stirred a long‑silent wallet dating to 2011, with on‑chain analysts estimating the original outlay at roughly $70 and valuing the 20.43 BTC moved this week at about $1.7 million. The implied return exceeds two million per cent.

Analysis of the address history indicates the coins were accumulated between February and May 2011 through a series of roughly ten payouts from an entity tagged by Arkham as Braiins Mining, formerly known as Slush Pool, one of the first bitcoin mining pools. Over its lifetime, the wallet received 429.88 BTC across 43 payments, a flow pattern more consistent with pooled mining rewards than exchange purchases, according to the same assessments.

Two specific 2011 outputs were involved in this week’s activity: 10.10 BTC received on 1st May 2011 and 10.33 BTC received on 8th May 2011. After more than fifteen years of dormancy, the holder split the 10.33 BTC into 5.20 BTC and 5.13 BTC, and the 10.10 BTC into 5 BTC and 5.10 BTC, sending the funds to modern SegWit (bc1) addresses. The transactions cost fees of 300 and 726 satoshis respectively, well under $1 at current rates.

About twenty‑eight minutes later, the new 5.13 BTC output was consolidated with small balances from several other addresses, including dust linked to the original 2011 wallet, into a single 5.52 BTC output. The consolidation suggests control by one user operating contemporary wallet software. As of publication, no portion of the moved coins had been traced to known exchange deposit addresses.

Historically, the address sent some of its early holdings to well‑known destinations. Records point to transfers to a Mt. Gox deposit address and, in October 2011, to an address labelled Silk Road. While those tags attract attention today, such flows were commonplace in 2011, when Mt. Gox dominated trading and Silk Road was among the few merchants accepting bitcoin.

The renewed focus on old coins comes as Mt. Gox’s trustee approaches the 31st October 2026 creditor repayment deadline, having reportedly moved 10,422 BTC in June and retaining about 34,504 BTC. Although the reawakened wallet is not a trustee address, any 2011‑era movements with Mt. Gox links draw heightened scrutiny this close to milestone dates.
