Biden affirms NATO’s “sacred obligation” amid global tensions

10th July 2024 – (Washington) On the occasion of NATO’s 75th anniversary, US President Joe Biden emphasised the alliance’s critical role in maintaining global order during a significant gathering in Washington with NATO member leaders. Labelling the alliance’s commitment as a “sacred obligation,” Biden’s remarks were punctuated by references to current global challenges, notably Russia’s aggression in Ukraine.

The President underscored the necessity for unity and strength among the member states, particularly when confronting autocrats who threaten to destabilize the international structure. Biden vividly outlined the U.S.’s readiness to defend NATO territories across all domains, including land, air, sea, cyber, and space, thereby reinforcing America’s dedication to the treaty forged seven decades ago in the same venue.

During this assembly, Biden also announced a collaborative effort among several NATO countries to provide substantial air-defiance equipment to Ukraine. He expressed a firm stance on Ukraine’s sovereignty, asserting that Ukraine will emerge victorious against Russian advances, thereby ensuring its status as a free and independent state.

The summit also served as a strategic platform for Biden to demonstrate leadership amidst internal political challenges and scepticism about his reelection prospects. By engaging with European Union, Indo-Pacific partners, and notable figures such as the newly elected British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Biden sought to solidify transatlantic and global ties.

Moreover, the discussions extended beyond European borders, addressing security interests in the Indo-Pacific region, thus highlighting the global scope of NATO’s strategic interests.
