Avalanche kills snowboarder in Japan’s Gunma prefecture

30th January 2023 – (Tokyo) A snowboarder was killed on Sunday after being caught in an avalanche in eastern central Japan’s Gunma prefecture, local media reported.

The 46-year-old woman, among a group of four, was snowboarding in the backcountry area at Mount Tanigawa in the town of Minakami, and the rest of the group called the police at 10.55am local time to report her missing, Kyodo News reported.

Following the report, the woman, a company employee in the prefecture, was found buried in snow and unconscious, according to the local police station.

Her death was confirmed later after being transported to a hospital in the city of Maebashi. The other three were not injured.

On the same day, another avalanche accident was reported at a ski resort in the country’s Nagano prefecture, where two among a group of five foreign skiers still remained unconscious at the scene.
