21st August 2026 – (Sydney) Australia’s biggest electricity retailer, Origin Energy, has revealed that the full bank account numbers of around 60 customers were accessed during a significant cybersecurity breach that occurred in July. The company, which provides services to 4.8 million customers across the country, confirmed in a statement that out of some 900,000 affected customers, a small number had their complete bank account details compromised during the attack.

In addition to the bank account data, Origin Energy reported that identification document numbers for 100 customers were accessed, along with numbers linked to government schemes or programmes belonging to approximately 15,000 further customers. The breach was first disclosed on 22nd July, after a hacker claimed responsibility for accessing the personal data of just under 2 million customers.

Initial communications from the company suggested that neither credit card nor bank account information had been affected. However, by 23rd July, Origin acknowledged that partial bank account and credit card details could have been exposed. The company’s Chief Executive Officer, Frank Calabria, stated on Friday that a criminal investigation is underway and reiterated that Origin Energy has since introduced additional security measures to guard against similar incidents in future.
