Asian Games in Hangzhou postponed due to COVID-19 outbreak

6th May 2022 - (Hangzhou) Asian Games Director-General Husain Al-Musallam announced on Friday (6th) that the 19th Asian Games originally scheduled to be held in Hangzhou, China from September 10th to 25th this year will be postponed, and the specific date will be announced later. The official did not explain the reason for the delay, but Japanese media quoted people familiar with the matter as saying that it was because of the outbreak of the COVID-19 in the mainland.

Last week, it was reported that the Asian Games may be postponed due to the unresolved COVID-19 epidemic in the surrounding areas of Hangzhou, which is less than 200 kilometres away from Shanghai. In addition to the Hangzhou Asian Games, the Tokyo Olympics in Japan, originally scheduled to be held in the summer of 2020, were also postponed for one year due to COVID-19 epidemic. During the Tokyo Olympics, the Japanese government implemented a number of anti-epidemic measures to protect athletes from contracting the virus, and strictly limited spectator arrangements.
