10th September 2026 – (Cupertino) Apple has announced the release of its latest AirPods 5 during the “Surprise and Shine” event, marking a new generation for its range of non-Pro wireless earbuds. The headline feature for this update is a substantially upgraded active noise cancellation system, which Apple claims is now fifty per cent more effective than the previous model. Although these remain the non-Pro variant without ear tips, the new ANC improvements set a higher standard for the entry-level range, offering more value for fans of Apple’s in-ear design.

In addition, two models have been unveiled. The standard version provides approximately four hours of battery life with ANC enabled, while the premium version extends battery performance to five hours with ANC, and includes support for wireless charging and swipe controls. Wireless charging, while not a transformational update, offers added convenience for users keen to quickly recharge their earbuds by simply placing them on a charging pad once home.

Enhancements to the AirPods 5 go beyond noise cancellation. Features such as Adaptive EQ, conversation awareness, and adaptive audio are available, supporting a more responsive listening experience. Apple is also positioning the AirPods 5 as an essential tool for accessing Apple Intelligence, including live translation functions and upgraded Siri AI capabilities. The design draws inspiration from the AirPods Pro 3, with a revised acoustic architecture intended to deliver greater sound detail and an improved fit for a wider variety of ear shapes. Apple also states that the updates will make Personalized Spatial Audio even more immersive and dynamic.

Significantly, despite anticipation, Apple did not introduce AirPods equipped with cameras at this event. Industry sources have suggested that such a product, expected to offer computer vision capabilities without direct photo or video features, may arrive next year. Both versions of the AirPods 5 are open for pre-order now, retailing at US$129 for the base model and US$149 for the advanced version, with availability commencing from 18th September.
