13th May 2026 – (Cupertino) Apple is preparing a sweeping refresh of the iPhone’s software, with iOS 27 set to debut at WWDC on 8th June featuring a fully customisable Camera app and a rebuilt Siri that functions as an always‑on AI agent. The overhaul is designed to streamline Apple’s Liquid Glass design language and introduce new animations and interface tweaks across the system.
The Camera app will allow users to choose which controls appear and where they sit, catering to professionals and enthusiasts alike. Widgets running along the top can be tailored per shooting mode from a transparent “Add Widgets” tray, with options spanning flash, exposure, resolution, timer, depth‑of‑field and photo styles, plus new in‑app grid and level tools. The master toggle for controls shifts to the right of the shutter button. A new Siri mode joins photo and video, tapping Apple’s visual intelligence for tasks such as plant identification and instant translation.
Siri is being repositioned from a simple voice assistant to a conversational agent that can act across apps and draw on personal data with user permission. It will primarily live in the Dynamic Island with a pill‑shaped animation on activation, and responses will appear in a transparent card that can be swiped down into a chat‑style thread. A dedicated Siri app arrives for the first time, providing a searchable archive of past interactions, quick access to continue chats, and tools to upload images and documents. System‑wide, a new “Search or Ask” bar drops from the top‑centre of the screen to provide richer results from within apps and the web; users can also opt to query third‑party chatbots such as ChatGPT or Gemini instead of Siri.
Apple is also revamping core apps. Safari gains a new start page with four tabs for faster switching between favourites, bookmarks, reading list and history. Weather adds a “Conditions” panel on city pages to surface rain and wind without leaving the main view. Image Playground is redesigned with a simplified canvas, a “describe a change” edit option and more lifelike generative models, while previously created images now sit in a grid with softer corners and a new “+” button to start fresh.
System changes extend to unified tab bars in apps like Podcasts, TV, Music, Health and News; a new keyboard animation that slides keys up from the bottom; and undo/redo controls when rearranging the Home Screen—handy for frequent widget and icon tinkerers. Additional updates are planned for Photos, Wallet and Shortcuts.
The reveal will follow Google’s announcement of Android 17 and its Gemini Intelligence upgrades, which add AI‑created home‑screen widgets, a “Rambler” dictation mode that filters filler words and tighter cross‑app task handling. Apple declined to comment ahead of WWDC.
