Apple Daily and Stand News prevented from covering National Constitution Day forum attended by Carrie Lam and Wang Zhimin from HK Liaison Office


4th December 2019 – (Hong Kong) A forum to commemorate the 37th anniversary of the promulgation of the 1982 Chinese constitution was held this morning. The National Constitution Day event was organised by Endeavour Education Centre Limited and it was attended by around 700 people. Dignitaries who were present include Chief Executive Carrie Lam and Wang Zhimin, director of the central government’s liaison office in Hong Kong. Renmin University law professor Han Dayuan, who sits on the Basic Law Committee which advises the national legislature on the city’s mini-constitution emphasised on both the Chinese constitution and national sovereignty as foundations of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Media reporters that were invited to cover the event were Wen Wei Po, Ta Kung Pao, SCMP, Sing Tao Daily, Ming Pao, HK01, RTHK and several others. Stand news and Apple Daily were refused entry as they were not invited. In response, Apple Daily insinuated by referring to the statement made by Carrie Lam yesterday who stressed on press freedom.

Meanwhile, pro-democracy Legislative Council, Claudia Mo also criticised Carrie Lam for advocating freedom of press yesterday while she ironically attended the National Constitution Day forum today which banned pro-democracy media outlets. She alleged that the actions were clearly an act of political revenge.
