1st December 2022 – (Hong Kong) Officers of the Special Duty Team of the Tsuen Wan Police District discovered earlier that someone was promoting illegal gambling websites through social media. After in-depth investigation, the personnel identified her identity, and launched an anti-illegal gambling operation today. During the operation, the police arrested a woman surnamed Kan (20 years old) on suspicion of “promoting or facilitating the taking of bets”. During the operation, officers seized a mobile phone. The police launched an anti-illegal gambling operation from the 21st to the 27th of last month, arresting 7 social media influencers commonly known as “KOL” (Key Opinion Leaders) for promoting illegal gambling websites through social media. One of the women involved is 28-year-old social media influencer Lam Bui-yee. Police appeal to members of the public not to take part in illegal gambling activities during the World Cup. The police pointed out that the promotion or facilitation of betting is punishable by a fine of 5 million Hong Kong dollars and imprisonment for 7 years upon conviction.
