20th April 2023 – (Hong Kong) Hong Kong’s popular charity book sale, “Books for Love @ HK$10,” has returned for its 11th year. This year, over 250,000 pre-loved books were donated and sorted by almost 6,000 volunteers. The event is taking place from 20th to 23rd April and 27th to 30th April at two different venues in Taikoo Place (ArtisTree, Cambridge House; 19/F, Berkshire House). The sale offers a wide range of secondhand books, including fiction, literature, arts, travel, and comic books, all priced at just HK$10 each. The sale also features a “buy 10, get 1 free” offer and a special section dedicated to the late renowned author, Ni Kuang.
All proceeds from the book sale will go towards supporting the Treasure Trove project led by The Boys‘ & Girls’ Clubs Association of Hong Kong and promoting the development of sustainable volunteerism by the Agency for Volunteer Service. The aim of “Books for Love @ $10” is to promote a love of reading in a green and affordable way while contributing to a meaningful cause. The programme involves collecting second-hand books donated by the public, which are then sorted into categories by volunteers and sold at a charity price of HK$10 each. Last year, the programme raised over HK$1 million, breaking all previous records since its launch in 2009.
In addition to the physical book sale, there is also a time-limited online charity book sale offering over 10,000 quality second-hand books for children and young adults. The initiative also features the “Editor’s Top 10” Reading Surprise Pack and “Gift a Book” Charity Vouchers to spread the joy of reading to more children. The entire initiative is run by a group of dedicated volunteers, from book sorting to information uploading, demonstrating the power of volunteerism in the community.
The event has already seen a good turnout on its opening day, with many people purchasing more than 10 books, and the Ni Kuang section being particularly popular. The event is expected to raise more funds than last year’s event, with all funds going towards supporting valuable causes.
