22nd January 2022 – (Hong Kong) Earlier, the government ordered that all pet shops selling hamsters in Hong Kong must be closed, and more than 2,000 small animals should be culled. The Centre for Health Protection announced last night (21st) that a total of 7 environmental samples from 4 pet shops were confirmed to be infected with the Delta variant virus, including I Love Rabbit’s 2 branches in Yuen Long and Causeway Bay and 2 Little Boss branches in Mong Kok.
Love Rabbit issued a statement on social media on 20th January stating that in order to protect the health of customers and small animals, and to comply with the guidelines of the Centre for Health and Epidemic Prevention, all branches of I Love Rabbit, Miss Rabbit and Little Boss in Hong Kong have been closed. Internal cleaning and disinfection will be conducted and customers can visit their online store to buy daily necessities for small animals.
The statement also mentioned that the health of small animals has been the main premise for many years. Therefore, when small animals are exported from the Netherlands, they must undergo a health check by a local veterinarian in the Netherlands before leaving the country, and be approved by the Hong Kong Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation upon arrival in Hong Kong before safe delivery to the company.
The company expressed grief over the culling of hamster and small animals but it said that it will follow the professional judgment of the Centre for Health Protection by handing over the relevant small animals to the authorities.
