A statistical Hongkonger needs to work 11.3 days to buy the new iPhone 13 Pro, 0.6 days more than 2020


15th September 2021 – (Hong Kong) In Hong Kong, the official price of the basic iPhone 13 Pro (128 GB) will cost HK$8,499. Similar to the previous year, buyers will find neither a charger nor earphones in the box. The only exception is France, where the law requires Apple to include earphones.

According to the latest Census and Statistics Department data, the average wage in Hong Kong is HK$16,841 gross (HK$15,858 net). This means that a statistical Hongkonger would have to work for 11.3 days to afford the iPhone 13 Pro (assuming they spend all the earned money). Compared to last year’s iPhone Index, Hong Kong’s result deteriorated by 0.6 days.

This is what the iPhone Index looked like in  Hong Kong in previous years:

  • 2018 – 11.5 days
  • 2019 – 10.8 days
  • 2020 – 10.7 days
  • 2021 – 11.3 days

On the other hand, people in Taiwan, where the average wage amounts to NT$45,195 gross (NT$42,935 net), would have to work 16.1 days on average for the iPhone 13 Pro. The latest Apple device costs NT$32,900 in this country.

A Swiss can earn money for the newest iPhone the quickest — just 4.4 days. An average American can afford the latest gadget after working for 5.9 days, Australian and Luxembourger— after 6.4 days.

Among the considered countries, the worst result was noted in Turkey, where the iPhone is worth 92.5 working days. The second and third-worst results belong to the Philippines and Brazil — 90.2 and 79.2 days respectively.
