22nd March 2023 – (New York) 92-year-old billionaire media mogul Rupert Murdoch has announced his engagement to Ann Lesley Smith, a former police chaplain and widow of country music star Chester Smith. The 92-year-old and 66-year-old met in September 2022 at Murdoch’s vineyard in Bel Air, California, and got engaged on St. Patrick’s Day in New York City.
Murdoch confirmed the news to his own publication, The New York Post, stating that he was “very nervous” and “dreaded falling in love” but knew that Smith would be his last wife. He described himself as “happy” and expressed his hope that this will be his final marriage.
Smith, who was previously married to attorney John B. Huntington and then to Chester Smith, the founder of the Spanish TV giant Univision, said that she and Murdoch “share the same beliefs” and “speak the same language.” She described their relationship as “a gift from God.” The couple plans to split their time between California, Britain, Montana, and New York, with the wedding set to take place this summer.
Murdoch’s engagement comes as his media empire, which includes Fox News, is embroiled in a legal battle with Dominion Voting Systems over allegations of election fraud promoted on air by Fox News hosts and commentators. This is Murdoch’s fifth marriage, having divorced former supermodel Jerry Hall in August 2022. He has six children from his first three marriages.
The news of the engagement has caused a stir in the media world, with many speculating about the couple’s plans and the potential impact on Murdoch’s business interests. Murdoch has long been a dominant force in the media industry, with his empire spanning newspapers, television, and film. He is estimated to be worth over $20 billion and has faced criticism over his business practices and editorial decisions.
