8th December 2023 – (Yokohama City) A tragic incident occurred on Thursday afternoon in Yokohama City, Japan, when a car driven by an 86-year-old man collided with a building housing a private tutoring school, injuring five individuals, including the driver and a 90-year-old woman accompanying him. The accident took place in Aoba Ward around 4.30pm local time, when the passenger car plowed into a room on the first floor of the building from an adjacent parking lot.
According to local police, the driver and the 90-year-old woman were transported to the hospital and remained conscious. The three other injured individuals were a male tutor in his 50s and two young part-time male employees inside the building. Their conditions are currently unknown.
Local authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, and the safety of elderly drivers is once again a topic of concern in Japan. In 2022, the number of deadly traffic accidents caused by drivers aged 75 or over in the country rose to 379, according to official data.
