11th September 2026 – (Hong Kong) Two construction workers were struck by a heavy bundle of iron tubes that rolled down a hillside at a Lok Ma Chau exploration site this afternoon and were later flown by helicopter to hospital while still conscious.

Police received a report at about 4pm that two workers had been hurt on a slope near Ma Tso Lung in the Lok Ma Chau area. Rescuers found a 53-year-old woman surnamed Lo with injuries to her chest and leg, and a 52-year-old man surnamed Wong with injuries to his back and head. Both remained lucid at the scene.

According to information from the site, exploratory works were under way and crews were preparing to drive foundations when a helicopter lifted a bundle of 60 iron tubes onto the slope. Each tube measured six metres in length, and the load weighed about 800 kilogrammes in total. The tubes then rolled unexpectedly down the incline and struck the two workers.

Colleagues who saw the accident raised the alarm and sought help. Emergency crews arranged an airlift that took both casualties to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital for treatment. Initial accounts stressed that neither worker had lost consciousness before being flown out of the remote slope.

The combination of an active exploration site, foundation preparation and a helicopter-borne steel delivery left little room for error on the incline near Ma Tso Lung. Once the bundled tubes left the intended set-down and rolled, Lo and Wong were in the path of an 800-kilogramme load made up of 60 six-metre iron tubes.

The first account left the industrial inquiry open while confirming the core sequence: a 4pm police call, exploratory and foundation work under way, the helicopter lift of the heavy tube bundle, the unexpected roll down the slope, colleagues raising the alarm, and the airlift of two still-conscious workers — Lo with chest and leg injuries, Wong with back and head injuries — to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital.
