71-year-old woman who assaulted TVB host during interview applies for stay of proceedings due to extensive media coverage


8th December 2022 – (Hong Kong) When the TVB host of its “SCOOP” programme, Joan Lee interviewed a woman earlier, she was suspected of being assaulted by the other party. . The 71-year-old woman in the case was later charged with two counts of common assault. The case was originally scheduled to start trial at the West Kowloon Magistrates’ Court today (8th), but the female defendant without a legal representation said that she could not get a fair trial due to the extensive media coverage of negative news about her before the trial, so she applied for stay of proceedings.

Deputy Magistrate adjourned the case to 1st February next year, when the application for stay of proceedings will be processed and the media is prohibited from directly or indirectly contacting the defendant. 71-year-old defendant Chan appeared in court and spoke in English today. She was charged with two counts of common assault, alleging that she attacked Lee on 28th April, 2022, opposite Mau Kee Restaurant on South Lantau Road, Lantau Island, Hong Kong, and near the lamppost number FB0056.
