7.7-magnitude earthquake strikes northeast of Mindanao Island, Philippines, prompting tsunami alert

2nd December 2023 – (Manila) In a seismic event detected by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck the waters northeast of Mindanao Island, Philippines, at 10.37pm on Saturday (2nd December). Following the earthquake, the United States tsunami warning system has issued an alert. As of now, there have been no reports of casualties or significant damage to buildings.

The epicentre of the earthquake was located in the waters northeast of Mindanao Island, with a shallow depth of 32.8 kilometres. The earthquake’s intensity, as detected by the China Earthquake Networks Center, was recorded at 7.4 magnitude, with a depth of 74 kilometres.
