21st April 2024 – (Hong Kong) A 62-year-old female inmate at Lo Wu Correctional Institution passed away in a public hospital. The inmate, who had been suffering from lung cancer, required ongoing medical attention and follow-up treatment both at the institution’s hospital and a public healthcare facility. On April 8, she was transferred to the public hospital for treatment due to physical discomfort. Unfortunately, her condition worsened during her hospital stay, leading to her certified death at 2.23pm today.

The incident has been reported to the Police, and a death inquest is slated to be conducted by the Coroner’s Court. The inquest aims to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the inmate’s untimely demise.

It is noteworthy that the deceased inmate had been serving a prison sentence since September 2023 for the offence of theft. The correctional institution and relevant authorities are expected to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation to ascertain any factors that may have contributed to the inmate’s deteriorating health and subsequent passing.
