31st January 2023 – (Hong Kong) At around 5pm yesterday, a 50-year-old worker climbed to the top of a 20m high tower crane at Whitehead student hostel construction site of the City University of Hong Kong (CityU) in Ma On Shan and jumped down. He fell into a pile of steel bars on the platform and was trapped. Rescuers rushed to the scene after receiving the report, and the firemen was also called to the scene to assist. After more than an hour, the rescuers finally rescued the male worker, but he was in a coma. The victim surnamed Chan was immediately sent by ambulance to the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin, where he was finally certified dead.
Police did not find a suicide note at the scene. After preliminary investigation, the case was listed as suicide. It is understood that Chan was the breadwinner of the family, while his wife is the housewife, and the couple have 2 children. Chen didn’t have any persistent illnesses, and his family members didn’t notice any abnormalities in him before the accident. CityU expresses its shock at the incident and expresses its deep condolences to the deceased and his family. The university has asked the site contractor to follow up on the incident closely and submit a report on the incident as soon as possible.
