48-year-old woman scammed over HK$5.3m to purchase cryptocurrencies online, 3 suspects arrested


19th July 2022 – (Hong Kong) A woman was cheated of HK$5.3 million for buying cryptocurrencies online. The police received a report from a 48-year-old woman on 20th April this year, saying that she met a man through an online communication platform in September last year and purchased cryptocurrencies through an online application. She made payments 13 times respectively amounting to a total of HK$5.3 million. The money was transferred to 10 local bank accounts designated by the man.

Later, when she tried to withdraw money, it was found that the online app was shut down and she suspected of being deceived. The Mong Kok District Crime Squad took over the investigation and at about 9.30am yesterday morning (18th), three local men aged between 19 and 60 were arrested in Sheung Shui, Kwai Tsing and Sham Shui Po districts on suspicion of obtaining property by deception. The three arrested persons are the owners of the bank accounts involved. They have been released on bail pending investigation and must report to the police in late August.
